For professionals

Optometrists and family doctors

If you find something in a patient and would like me to assess it, here is how to send them, what is urgent and what you will get back.

  • Same dayfor a shadow, flashes or sudden loss of vision
  • One callto +34 976 22 27 05, or the form on this page
  • A report backif the patient agrees

What I can see

Cataract

I assess the cataract and, if the patient wants to rely less on glasses, which lens suits them: monofocal, toric, extended depth of focus (EDOF) or trifocal. I measure the eye with optical biometry and check the macula with OCT before recommending a premium lens. Patients can try the difference in the vision simulator.

Retina

My specialty for 24 years: macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, retinal tears and retinal detachment. I do OCT, intravitreal injections, laser and vitrectomy.

Glaucoma

High pressure, a cup you are not happy with, a narrow angle or a family history. I assess the nerve with OCT, visual fields and gonioscopy, and measure the pressure taking the cornea into account.

What is urgent

Same day

  • A shadow or curtain spreading across the visual field.
  • Flashes with many new floaters all at once.
  • Sudden loss of vision in one eye.
  • A red, painful eye with blurred vision and halos: it may be acute angle closure.
  • Pain and a red eye in a contact lens wearer.

Within a few days

  • Straight lines looking bent, or a recent central blur.
  • A drop in vision in a patient with diabetes.
  • Very high eye pressure, even without symptoms.

Routine

  • A cataract that now gets in the way of driving, reading or work.
  • Slightly raised pressure or a suspicious cup, without symptoms.
  • A fundus check in a patient with diabetes or high myopia.

If it is urgent, call. The form is not read instantly. On +34 976 22 27 05 we will tell you when the patient can come.

How to refer

Use whichever is easiest for you:

  • By phone, on +34 976 22 27 05. Say you are referring a patient.
  • With the form on this page. We call the patient.
  • With a note for the patient, which they bring on the day.

This is what helps me most:

  • Best-corrected visual acuity and the prescription.
  • The eye pressure, if you measured it, and with which instrument.
  • What you found and since when.
  • If you took a fundus photograph or an OCT, ask the patient to bring it on paper or on a memory stick.

What happens next

We call the patient and give them an appointment according to how urgent the case is. After seeing them, and if they agree, I send you a report with the diagnosis and what we have decided.

The patient goes back to you with my recommendations for their usual follow-up. If they need to return to my clinic, for instance to monitor glaucoma or macular degeneration, I say so in the report.

Referral form

Before sending it, tell the patient you are passing us their details so that we can call them. Do not attach reports or test results: the essentials are enough.
